ABSTRACT

Clinical supervision is one of the primary means by which health service psychologists learn to provide clinical care to patients or clients. Clinical supervision has been conceptualized as an intervention that consists of a collaborative and evaluative relationship in which the supervisor monitors the professional services offered and serves as a gate keeper of those who are entering the profession. In the general fields of clinical and counseling psychology, supervision is one of the top five activities performed by psychologists. During the last three decades, the importance of clinical supervision has been recognized in clinical psychology in various ways. This book provides a detailed discussion of topics relevant to the provision of supervision in clinical neuropsychology for supervisors, training programs, and trainees who are learning how to supervise. Each chapter has been written by authors with extensive experience teaching and supervising trainees at all levels of training (i.e., practicum, internship, and postdoctoral residency). The specialty of neuropsychology has grappled with changes in clinical practice as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing and stay-at-home orders drastically altered the provision of services and escalated the conversation around tele-neuropsychology. The effects of the pandemic have also extended to supervision. Trainees have been faced with suspension of in-person patient care and a rapid shift to virtual supervision and didactics. Supervisors have needed to navigate the ethical and legal waters of providing supervision at a distance while ensuring that trainees are being appropriately supervised. On a more positive note, trainees are learning first-hand that their supervisors do not always have the answers and that learning is an ongoing aspect of being a neuropsychologist. ABSTRACT

When contemplating the broad field of critical care and all of its complexities, rehabilitation and psychology practice is not likely among the top 10 services that clinicians, patients, or the public think of. Still, the need for psychologists and rehabilitation-oriented clinicians is everywhere, in large part because intensive care stands among the most emotionally intense and physically taxing hospital-based settings for everyone involved-patients, families, caregivers, and staff alike. Critical care practice has steadily evolved thanks to the ingenuity, perseverance, and quality care provided by countless pioneering clinicians. As a consequence, it is increasingly understood that there are costs associated with survivorship, including persistent psychological, cognitive, and physical issues that affect survivors and families alike. The authors believe that properly trained clinicians with a rehabilitative and psychologically minded approach have something unique to offer in the critical care environment, not only to patients and families but also to the treatment team, institution, and society at large. This book was designed to provide a broad overview of rehabilitation and psychology practice across the continuum of critical care settings. Although most chapters emphasize contemporary psychology practice, the book is written to appeal to an interdisciplinary audience. The book includes an important chapter on the intersection of infectious diseases and critical illnesses and also presents COVID-19-related information in relevant chapters. The chapters have been intentionally written to pique the interest of psychologists who work in hospital settings as well as other critical care professionals from diverse disciplines (physicians;allied health professionals;nurses;chaplains;speech-language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists). It covers considerations across the lifespan are covered from pediatrics to geriatrics. Furthermore, although critical care issues are discussed broadly, there is a primary focus on rehabilitative and behavioral health science interventions and assessment techniques. ABSTRACT

There are many reasons why patients are admitted to, and treated in, the intensive care unit (ICU), including individuals who require close monitoring and support for critical organ systems such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, and renal system. The increasing prevalence of critical illness, coupled with improvements in its treatment, has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of ICU survivors. Some survivors will recover and return to their pre-illness baseline level of function;however, one third to one half of all survivors are not so fortunate and will develop postintensive care syndrome. This chapter focuses on cognitive outcomes of critical illness survivors treated in the ICU for acute respiratory failure, sepsis, and other medical or surgical conditions. It discusses the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors, assessment, management, and the short- and long-term neurologic outcomes for survivors of critical illness and critically ill survivors of COVID-19 including neurocognitive disorders. The chapter explores the psychologist's role in caring for survivors of critical illness and covers integrative concepts that require collaboration among members of the interdisciplinary team. The chapter also discusses Interventions to improve outcomes, including environmental management, tracking mental status, pharmacologic interventions, family intervention and support, and rehabilitation interventions.
